Application Guidelines

Applications must be sent to us by postal mail. Enclose materials as required in the Guidelines below, and a $35 check, payable to Washington University, for the application fee. Late applications will be considered on a space-available basis.

APPLICATION GUIDELINES:

If you are applying to the Fiction workshop: Enclose your completed application form, a $35 check, and a total of 25 typewritten, hard-copy, double-spaced, and paginated pages of unpublished fiction. If you are a novelist, please submit the first 25 pages of your novel. This material will be read and workshopped by your instructor and class during the first week of the Institute.

If you are applying to the Poetry Workshop: Enclose your completed application form, a $35 check, and 10 unpublished poems which are typewritten in a standard typeface.  Please put your name on each page. This material will be read and workshopped by your instructor and class during the first week of the Institute.

If you are applying to the Creative Nonfiction Workshop: Enclose your completed application form, a $35 check, and a total of 25 typewritten,  hard-copy, double-spaced, and paginated pages of unpublished creative nonfiction. Creative nonfiction includes essays, memoirs, autobiography, nature writing, travel writing, third-person narrative nonfiction (for example: biography, history, or true-crime), and first-person narrative nonfiction (for example: a eyewitness account strongly supported by documentable facts). This material will be read and workshopped by your instructor and class during the first week of the Institute.

If you are applying to the Young Writers Institute: You must be a high-school student entering your junior or senior year in the fall of 2010. Enclose your completed application form, a $35 check, a sealed letter of recommendation from a teacher, and a total of 10 pages of typewritten, hard-copy, unpublished poetry or creative prose. This material will be read and workshopped by your instructor and class during the first week of the Institute. 

For all applicants: 

  • -Your writing sample should be work in progress -- writings for which you are seeking reader responses and suggestions for improvement.
  • -Checks should be made out to Washington University.
  • -Application deadline will be May 7, 2010.
