SUMMER IN ST. LOUIS
Summer is one of the best times to experience St. Louis, Missouri. Fine as well as affordable dining is plentiful in nearby Clayton or the fashionable Central West End. "The Loop," a shopping, dining, and entertainment area just north of the Washington University campus, is a ten-minute walk. Colorful areas in St. Louis include the Mississippi Riverfront; St. Louis's Italian neighborhood, called "The Hill"; Soulard, the city's "French Quarter"; and South Grand Avenue, which has an array of international shops and restaurants.
The St. Louis MetroLink above-ground train system links downtown, St. Louis Lambert Airport, and western and eastern suburban St. Louis areas, including Illinois. There are two MetroLink stops next to the Washington University campus: Big Bend, and Skinker. Ample parking is also available.
The Washington University campus, with its traditional architecture, is at its greenest and most beautiful during the summers. Across the street from Washington University, in Forest Park, are golf courses, tennis courts, an art museum, and a world-famous zoo. A seven-mile walking/running/biking trail circles the park. The Missouri Historical Society, the Science Center, The City Museum, and the Missouri Botanical Garden all contain outstanding exhibits and research and entertainment opportunities.
Dining on campus: Several cafeteria-style stations are open from 11 a.m. to 3:00 p.m. in the new Danforth University Center, plus a sit-down restaurant. Sandwiches, salads, and snacks may also be purchased at Holmes Lounge, located in Eads Hall, or The Whispers Cafe in Olin Library. Dine indoors there, or outdoors anywhere on our green campus.
